How to Convert HEIC to JPG
Upload Your HEIC
Drop a HEIC or HEIF file from your iPhone, Mac, or emailed attachment. No installation needed.
Browser Decodes HEIC
The file is decoded right in your browser using an embedded HEIC decoder. Takes a few seconds on first file.
Download JPG
Save the JPG file instantly. Opens in every app on every device — no more compatibility issues.
Why Do iPhones Save Photos as HEIC?
HEIC became the default iPhone photo format in iOS 11 because it saves about half the storage space of JPG at the same visual quality. That is a big win for iCloud costs and on-device storage — but it comes with real compatibility headaches on Windows, on older Macs, and on most non-Apple software.
What HEIC Actually Is
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is Apple's branding of HEIF, an international standard published in 2015. HEIC uses the HEVC video codec (the same one used for 4K video) to compress still images, which is much more efficient than the 1992-era JPEG codec. A typical iPhone photo saved as HEIC is 1-2 MB. The same photo saved as JPG would be 2-4 MB.
Where HEIC Does Not Work
Windows 10 and earlier cannot open HEIC without installing a paid Microsoft Store codec. Windows 11 now supports HEIC natively. Older versions of Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office, and many free photo viewers still cannot read HEIC. Most email clients strip HEIC attachments or fail to preview them. Print-on-demand services, photo print kiosks, and e-commerce product upload forms often reject HEIC. Converting to JPG is the pragmatic fix.
How to Stop iPhone From Saving HEIC
If you get HEIC compatibility problems constantly, switch your iPhone to save JPG by default. Go to Settings > Camera > Formats > choose Most Compatible. All new photos from that point forward will be JPG. Existing HEIC files on your phone stay HEIC — only new photos change. The tradeoff is that each new photo will be about 2x the file size.
How This Converter Handles HEIC
Because browsers do not natively decode HEIC (except Safari on iOS), this converter bundles a JavaScript HEIC decoder that runs entirely on your device. The decoder reads the HEIC container, extracts the compressed HEVC image data, decompresses it to raw pixels, and draws them onto an HTML canvas. The canvas then exports the result as a JPG file using the browser's built-in JPG encoder. No part of your photo ever leaves your device.
Common Reasons to Convert HEIC to JPG
Sharing With Windows Users
Emailing an iPhone photo to a friend, family member, or client on Windows often shows a broken preview or a "cannot open" error. Convert to JPG first so the recipient sees the photo without needing any special codec.
E-commerce Product Uploads
Amazon, Etsy, Shopify, eBay, and most marketplaces reject HEIC uploads. Convert to JPG before listing products so your upload goes through first try without reformat errors.
Job Applications and Resumes
Resume headshots taken on an iPhone save as HEIC by default, and most applicant tracking systems (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever) cannot display HEIC. Convert to JPG before uploading so the hiring manager actually sees your photo.
Photo Printing and Kiosks
CVS, Walgreens, Shutterfly, and photo print kiosks at drugstores often do not accept HEIC. Convert to JPG first to use kiosks or upload to online print services without pre-processing errors.
Social Media Posts
Most social platforms automatically convert HEIC uploads, but some third-party schedulers (Buffer, Hootsuite, Later) and analytics tools still require JPG. Convert in advance to avoid broken previews in your content calendar.
Older Software and Apps
Adobe Photoshop CS6 and earlier, Microsoft Office 2019 and earlier, and many photo editors built before 2018 cannot open HEIC. Converting to JPG makes decades of older software compatible with modern iPhone photos.
