How to Convert HEIC to PNG

1

Upload Your HEIC

Drop a HEIC or HEIF file from your iPhone, Mac, or emailed attachment. No installation needed.

2

Browser Decodes HEIC

The file is decoded in your browser using an embedded HEIC decoder and re-encoded as a lossless PNG.

3

Download PNG

Save the PNG file instantly. Pixel-perfect, edit-ready, opens in every app on every device.

Why Convert HEIC to PNG?

HEIC is iPhone's default photo format, but most non-Apple software cannot read it. Converting to PNG gives you a lossless, universally compatible file ready for any editor, any document workflow, or any archive.

What HEIC Actually Is

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is Apple's branding of HEIF, an international standard published in 2015. HEIC uses the HEVC video codec (the same one used for 4K video) to compress still images, which is much more efficient than the 1992-era JPEG codec. A typical iPhone photo saved as HEIC is 1-2 MB. The same photo saved as PNG would be 6-10 MB — but the PNG opens in every application ever made.

Why Choose PNG Over JPG?

PNG is lossless. Every pixel from the HEIC is preserved exactly in the output. If you plan to edit the photo further — retouching, cropping, color correction, layered design work — PNG protects you from cumulative compression artifacts that JPG introduces every time you save. PNG also has universal alpha-transparency support, which matters if the HEIC came from a screenshot or sticker. For one-off sharing where file size is the priority, choose our HEIC to JPG converter instead.

Where HEIC Does Not Work

Windows 10 and earlier cannot open HEIC without installing a paid Microsoft Store codec. Windows 11 supports HEIC natively. Older versions of Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office, and many free photo viewers still cannot read HEIC. Most email clients strip HEIC attachments or fail to preview them. Print-on-demand services, photo print kiosks, and e-commerce product upload forms often reject HEIC. Converting to PNG is the pragmatic fix for design, editing, and archive workflows.

How This Converter Handles HEIC

Because browsers do not natively decode HEIC (except Safari on iOS), this converter bundles a JavaScript HEIC decoder that runs entirely on your device. The decoder reads the HEIC container, extracts the compressed HEVC image data, decompresses it to raw pixels, and draws them onto an HTML canvas. The canvas then exports the result as a PNG file using the browser's built-in lossless PNG encoder. No part of your photo ever leaves your device.

HEIC, HEIF, .heic file, iPhone photo — same thing?

Search results for HEIC use a dozen overlapping names — and they all point to the same file. If you searched for heic to png, convert heic to png, heic to png converter, .heic to .png, iphone photo to png, heif to png, or change heic to png, you are in the right place. The file your iPhone produces uses the .heic extension, the underlying standard is HEIF, and the result you want is a .png file you can open anywhere. This tool handles all of those variants in one place.

Common Reasons to Convert HEIC to PNG

Uploading to Windows or Google Docs

Many CMSs, Google Docs older accounts, and Windows-default tooling do not accept HEIC. PNG uploads successfully every time without requiring the recipient to install a codec.

Importing Into Desktop Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop CS6 and earlier choke on HEIC. Converting to PNG first preserves full quality with no compression artifacts and opens in every version of Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity, and Krita.

Preserving Transparency for Design Work

If your HEIC came from a screenshot or sticker with transparent areas, PNG keeps the full alpha channel intact — unlike JPG which would fill transparency with white. Universal alpha support is one of PNG's biggest strengths.

Submitting to Stock Photo Sites

Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, iStock, and most stock photo marketplaces still require PNG or JPG. PNG keeps the highest possible quality for review — important when image judges are looking at full-resolution previews.

Sharing With Non-Apple Users

Friends, family, and clients on Windows or older Macs frequently cannot open HEIC attachments. PNG opens in every email client, every preview pane, every chat app — no compatibility excuses.

Archiving iPhone Photos Long-Term

PNG is a more established and universally supported format for long-term archiving. If you are building a permanent photo archive or a backup that you want readable in 20 years, PNG gives you maximum future-proofing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert HEIC to PNG instead of JPG?
PNG is lossless — every pixel is preserved exactly. If you plan to edit the photo further in Photoshop, GIMP, or any image editor, PNG keeps the maximum amount of detail and never compounds compression artifacts. JPG saves smaller files but discards data on every save. For editing, archiving, and graphics work, PNG is the safer choice.
Does converting HEIC to PNG lose quality?
No. PNG uses lossless compression — the converted PNG contains the exact same pixels the HEIC decoder produced. HEIC itself is lossy, so the PNG cannot recover detail the HEIC threw away, but no additional loss occurs during conversion.
Does this work on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook?
Yes. The converter runs in your browser using JavaScript, so it works anywhere you have a modern browser. No codec purchase, no plugin, no app to install.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion happens inside your browser tab. The photo is decoded in memory on your device, converted, and made available for download. It never uploads or touches a server.
Why are iPhone photos HEIC instead of PNG?
Apple switched iPhones to HEIC in iOS 11 (2017) because HEIC files are about 50% smaller than JPG and much smaller than PNG at similar quality, saving iCloud and on-device storage. You can change this in Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible to force JPG, but there is no built-in iPhone option to save PNG directly.
Does this work for HEIF files too?
Yes. HEIC and HEIF are related — HEIF is the standard, HEIC is Apple's implementation. The tool accepts both .heic and .heif extensions and handles them identically.
Why is the PNG file larger than the HEIC?
PNG files are roughly 3-5x larger than HEIC equivalents. HEIC uses modern video compression; PNG uses lossless 1996-era compression designed for quality and compatibility, not file size. If file size matters more, convert to JPG instead.
Will my PNG keep transparency?
If your HEIC has an alpha channel (rare — iPhone camera photos do not have transparency, but screenshots and stickers may), the alpha is preserved in the PNG output. PNG natively supports full alpha transparency.
Is there a file size limit?
No enforced limit. The tool handles any HEIC your device can decode. Most iPhone photos (1-5 MB) convert in a few seconds. Very large ProRAW HEICs may take longer on older phones.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?
One at a time, but conversion is fast. For a whole camera roll, convert them sequentially, or use PixelPanda's paid plan with 50-image batch processing plus AI enhancement during conversion.

Why This Tool Exists

HEIC is great for storage. JPG is great for compatibility. PNG is the lossless escape hatch when you intend to edit the photo afterwards — and a lot of HEIC-to-JPG conversions get re-saved 3 or 4 times before they hit a feed, each one compounding compression artifacts.

We run the conversion locally in your browser using the same heic2any decoder our HEIC-to-JPG tool uses, just with a different canvas export. If you only need one quick share, JPG. If the photo is going into a designer's hands or a print order, PNG.
