AI Headshot & Avatar Statistics: First-Party Data from 1,610 Users

Last updated 2026-09-21 · Compiled from public, third-party sources

Every statistic about AI headshots you can find is a survey or a market-size estimate. The figures below are different: they are measured directly from the PixelPanda avatar and headshot builder. Between March and September 2026, 1,610 people (test accounts excluded) generated 4,830 avatar images by choosing a gender, age range, ethnicity, skin tone, hair, eyes and body type, and 39 of them wrote 287 free-text headshot briefs on top. Combined with device data, 180 days of Google Search Console demand across 86 profession-specific headshot pages, and 2,094 runs of the free AI selfie tool, this is a picture of what people actually ask an AI headshot generator to make, not what they say they want. Figures are PixelPanda platform data, September 2026, unless another source is named. Journalists and researchers may cite any statistic here with attribution to PixelPanda.

Key Takeaways

  • AI headshot users skew young: 44.8% choose a subject in their 20s and 31.2% in their 30s. Only 4.3% pick anyone over 50, even though the 50+ workforce is the group most likely to have an outdated photo (PixelPanda platform data)
  • Men are the slight majority of AI avatar builders at 52.9% vs 47.1% women, and nobody in 1,610 users chose the non-binary option (PixelPanda platform data)
  • No single ethnicity dominates: the most-chosen option, Northern European, is only 17.6% of builds, and "mixed ethnicity" is second at 15.1% (PixelPanda platform data)
  • The default "professional headshot" brief is corporate: 59% of people who wrote a custom brief asked for a corporate or business look, 51% specified a neutral or grey background, and 51% asked for studio lighting (PixelPanda platform data)
  • Headshot creation is a desktop task: 82.8% of avatar-creation events came from desktop, 16.9% from mobile (PixelPanda platform data)
  • Politician is the most-searched profession headshot: 36% of all search impressions across 86 profession-specific headshot pages went to the politician page, ahead of nurse, veterinarian, personal trainer and accountant (Google Search Console, 180 days to Sept 2026)

The Statistics
