Filling Etsy's Ten Photo Slots for Furniture

Furniture needs every slot. A workable order: styled hero in a room with the piece filling most of the frame, a straight-on front elevation against a plain wall, a three-quarter angle showing depth, a scale shot with a known object such as a dining chair or a standard 12-inch dinner plate, a dimensioned diagram photo with measurements typed over a clean elevation, a drawer or door open showing interior construction, a joinery close-up (dovetails, mortise and tenon, welded seams), a finish macro showing grain and sheen at eye distance, an honest flaw shot for vintage or reclaimed pieces, and the packed or flat-pack state if it ships knocked down.

The video slot runs roughly five to fifteen seconds with no audio. Use it for motion no photo can show: a soft-close drawer gliding, a leaf extending, a rocker moving, or a slow orbit that reveals depth.

Wood Tone, Glare, and the Crop Problem

Finish color is where furniture listings break. Mixed light sources push oak orange and walnut purple, and a phone auto white balance will happily bake that in. Shoot one consistent light source, put a neutral gray or white card in a test frame, and correct to it before you edit anything else. Then check the file on a phone screen at low brightness, since that is where most Etsy browsing happens.

Glossy tops, glass, mirror, and epoxy pours reflect the whole room, including you. Move the light source large and off to one side, shoot from slightly above the reflection angle, and use a polarizer for tabletop glare. Keep verticals straight: wide lenses at close range make case pieces lean, which reads as bad craftsmanship.

For crops, shoot looser than you need and prepare a square and a 4:5 version of the hero so a tall shelf or a long sofa never loses its ends in the grid.
