Etsy displays search and shop thumbnails in a landscape crop taken from the center of your first image, then shows the full frame on the listing page. If you shoot a tall stack of pancakes filling a vertical frame, the grid will slice off the syrup pour and the plate edge. Shoot and export a master file that is landscape or square, at least 2000 pixels on the shortest side, and keep the hero item centered with a margin of clean space around it so the crop has room to breathe.
Then zoom out further than instinct suggests. A single macro shot of one cookie crumb looks luscious at full size and unreadable at 300 pixels wide. The first image should show the whole product, the whole quantity, and enough contrast against the surface that the silhouette reads instantly. Save the extreme texture macros for images three through six, and never place label text, prices, or logos near the frame edges where the thumbnail crop will amputate them.
Gloss, Melt, and Color Buyers Will Compare
Food is the category where photo and reality get compared most literally, because the buyer eats the thing a week later and then writes a review. Chocolate is the worst offender: hot key lights soften tempering, ganache goes dull, and a bloom-free bar photographed once cannot be re-shot after it has sweated. Work fast, keep a chilled backup piece, and use bounced or diffused light rather than a bare bulb.
Glossy surfaces need the same discipline. Jam, glaze, hot sauce, and honey mirror your light source, so a big soft window or scrim gives you a long gentle highlight instead of a blown white blob. Backlight glass jars slightly to show real color and viscosity rather than a black jar with a sticker on it.
