eBay presents thumbnails and the gallery strip inside square frames, and a phone case is roughly twice as tall as it is wide. Shoot a single upright case centered in a 1:1 crop and up to half the frame is empty background, so your listing renders visually smaller than the neighbor who filled the box. Scale the case so it nearly touches the top and bottom of the square, leaving only a thin margin.
Better still, use the width. Angle the case about 15 degrees, or place the back shell and a front three-quarter view side by side so the pair spans the square diagonally. For the main image keep the background plain and light so the shell edge reads cleanly against eBay's white interface, then reserve angled and in-hand shots for positions two onward. Avoid drop shadows that look like added artwork, and never pad an image with a colored strip to force a square, since that reads as a border.
Killing Glare on Glossy Cases and Photographing Clear Backs
Glossy TPU and hard polycarbonate act like curved mirrors. A bare bulb or window becomes a white streak straight down the middle of the shell, exactly where eBay buyers zoom to check for scratches on a used case. Diffuse everything: a large softbox or a white sheet close to the case, positioned to one side, then a white card on the opposite side to lift the shadow. Rotate the case, not the lights, until the reflection strip falls off the edge.
Clear and frosted cases are the opposite problem. On white they vanish and the thumbnail looks like an empty frame, which reads as a low-effort listing. Shoot them on light gray or a soft gradient so the edges, the raised camera lip and the yellowing risk area all show, or mount the case on a phone with a bright wallpaper so shape is obvious. For color accuracy, set a custom white balance off a gray card and check muted tones on a phone screen before publishing, because sage photographed under warm light looks beige and generates not-as-described claims.
