Taming Glaze Reflections Without Killing Depth
A glossy glaze on a curved wall is a convex mirror. Point a bare speedlight or a window at a mug and you get a hard white blob on the belly, a blown-out rim, and a reflection of your window frame in the glaze. The fix is a large diffused source placed high and slightly behind the piece, so the highlight becomes a long soft gradient down the form instead of a hot spot. Add a black card just off-camera on the opposite side; that dark reflection is what defines the edge of a white or celadon pot against a light background.
Resist the urge to polarize everything. A circular polarizer will strip specular sheen, and a matte-looking photo of a glossy glaze is technically inaccurate. Kill the distracting reflections with card placement, keep enough sheen to read as glass. For matte and satin glazes do the opposite: raking side light at a low angle so surface texture, iron speckle, and crawling show up in Etsy's zoom view.
Filling All Ten Etsy Photo Slots With Purpose
Etsy gives you up to ten images plus a short video, and ceramics need nearly all of them. A workable order: hero three-quarter view on a clean neutral surface; straight-on profile that shows silhouette and handle shape; overhead shot into the interior, since bowl and mug interiors go dark and buyers want to see the glaze pooling; the piece in a hand for scale; the piece in use with coffee, soup, or flowers; a detail crop of glaze texture or speckle; the foot ring with your maker's mark; capacity shown with liquid to a fill line; and, for sets or made-to-order work, a lineup showing natural variation between pieces.
Use the last slot honestly. If you sell a glaze that varies kiln to kiln, or a piece with a known pinhole, photograph it. Etsy resolves cases in favor of buyers when an item does not match the listing images, and a variation photo is cheap insurance.
