AI Ceramics Photography for Shopify
Transform your ceramics photos into Shopify-ready product images. Professional backgrounds, perfect lighting, and marketplace-compliant quality.
Shopify is unusual among selling channels because it barely tells you what your photos must look like. There is no white background rule, no forced square, no ban on props. That freedom is exactly why ceramics listings go wrong on Shopify: a handmade mug, a stoneware serving bowl and a tall bud vase shot in three different setups will land in the same collection grid and look like three unrelated shops. The platform will not correct you, so the discipline has to come from your shoot.
The technical floor is simple. Upload at least 800 x 800 px or Shopify will not enable zoom, and zoom is where crazing, speckle, throwing lines and glaze pooling actually sell the piece. Aim for 2048 x 2048 px square masters, JPEG or PNG, comfortably inside Shopify's 20 megapixel and 20 MB ceilings.
The hard part is the clay itself. Glossy glazes mirror your softbox and your phone. White porcelain clips against a white sweep. Cobalt, celadon and iron-red shift badly under mixed light. And nothing in a photo tells a buyer whether your cup holds 6 oz or 16 oz unless you deliberately show it.

Sizing Ceramics For Shopify's Grid Crop
Most Shopify themes, Dawn included, apply one media aspect ratio to every product card. If you leave it on "adapt to first image," a portrait vase and a landscape platter will make your collection page jump around. Pick square and shoot square, then control how much of the frame each piece fills.
Here is the trap specific to pottery: if you fill the frame with every item, a 3 inch espresso cup and a 12 inch vase look identical in the grid. Instead, set a fixed camera distance per family of work and let small pieces sit smaller in frame. Shoot vertically tall pieces with headroom rather than cropping the rim, since Shopify's centered crop will bite the top off a tall vase in the thumbnail. Keep the foot ring roughly on the same horizontal line across the whole catalog so the grid reads as one collection.
Killing Glaze Glare Without Killing Texture
Glossy glaze is a curved mirror. A bare bulb or a phone screen shows up as a hard white blob, and once that highlight clips there is no texture inside it. Use a large diffused source well off to one side, add a white bounce card opposite, and check the specular strip that runs down the belly of the pot. You want a soft gradient highlight, not a rectangle with visible softbox edges.
Then push light back in for detail. Fully wrapped light flattens crazing, speckled stoneware, tenmoku break and wheel lines, so add a raking grazing light or turn the piece so one edge catches directional light. Shoot a gray card and lock white balance: celadon greens go gray under warm LEDs and cobalt goes purple under cheap daylight bulbs. Reserve at least one 2048 px macro of the glaze surface and one of the unglazed foot and maker's mark, because those are the images Shopify zoom rewards.
