Jewelry is the hardest product category to photograph and one of the easiest to sell badly on Shopify, because Shopify hands you total freedom on backgrounds and then quietly crops, resizes, and re-serves every file you upload. The technical side is simple to state and easy to get wrong. Shopify accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and GIF up to 20 megapixels and 20 MB, allows up to 250 media items per product, and needs roughly 2048 x 2048 px on a square shot for click-to-zoom to actually resolve prong detail and metal finish. That resolution is also the trap: at 2048 px, every fingerprint, dust mote, and polishing swirl on a ring is visible, and the camera and lightbox are reflected in the metal whether you planned for it or not.

Polished gold and silver are mirrors, so a jewelry photo is really a photo of the room. In a bare white lightbox you get a flat, gray-looking band with the lens hole reflected in it. The fix is to shape what the metal reflects: large diffused light through the top and sides, then thin black cards or black foam standing just outside frame to reintroduce dark edges so the curve of a shank or bezel reads as three dimensional. Add a small white bounce underneath to lift the shadow side without flattening the form.
Since Shopify does not require a specific background, decide once and apply it everywhere. Pure white on the main image keeps collection tiles clean and matches what Google Shopping expects if you sync your Shopify feed, but bright faceted stones and diamonds need something behind them: a soft gradient or a dark card angled below the stone gives facets contrast to refract, otherwise a diamond looks like a gray blob against white.
Scale, Variants, and Metal Color Across Themes
Shoppers cannot judge jewelry size from a floating product on white, and returns for "smaller than expected" are the most common jewelry problem on Shopify stores. Slot a hand, ear, or neck shot into media position two or three, and use a matched macro angle for every SKU so a 14mm pendant is visibly different from a 22mm one. Keep the same camera distance and focal length within a collection so relative size is honest across the grid.
Metal color is the other trap. Shopify variant images pull one photo per option value, so yellow, rose, and white gold each need their own frame shot under the same custom white balance from a gray card and exported in sRGB. Warm LED panels and auto white balance will push rose gold toward copper and rhodium toward blue. Also remember most Shopify themes crop product media to a fixed aspect ratio, so shoot with padding and keep the jewel centered.
