Shopify is unusual among selling channels because it barely tells you what your clothing photos should look like. Shopify themes apply a single crop to the whole product gallery and to collection thumbnails. If your section is set to square and you upload a full-length coat shot, the theme trims top and bottom, which is how hems and shoes vanish from grid tiles. Shoot apparel at 4:5 portrait and set the theme to match. It gives full-body room, fills more of a phone screen than 1:1, and still crops cleanly for the Shop app and social channels. Export at 2048 x 2560 so the zoom viewer has real pixels to work with, and let Shopify generate the WebP and responsive sizes rather than pre-compressing to 800 px.
Frame with crop margin: leave headroom above the model and space below the shoe line, because the collection grid, cart thumbnail and related-products carousel all sample different parts of the frame. Shoot every colorway from identical camera height and distance so the garment does not jump size as shoppers click variants.
Making Variant Images Match The Color Swatch
Shopify lets you assign an image to each variant and many themes build color swatches from those images, so the shopper taps a rust swatch and expects the photo and the delivered garment to agree. Apparel returns cluster around color, so shoot a grey card or ColorChecker in the first frame of every setup, keep the same white balance and light position for all colorways, and correct against the physical garment under daylight rather than to taste. Never eyedropper a swatch from a compressed JPEG.
Shoot all colorways of a style in one session. Coming back a week later with a different bulb or a different softbox distance is how the navy reads purple next to the black. Assign the front-facing image to each variant, not a detail crop, or the swatch renders as a blurred close-up of a sleeve. Name files descriptively, like linen-shirt-sage-front.jpg, because Shopify uses the filename in the image URL.
