AI Stationery Photography for Shopify
Transform your stationery photos into Shopify-ready product images. Professional backgrounds, perfect lighting, and marketplace-compliant quality.
Stationery is a category where the buying decision happens on details that are physically small: the sheen of foil on a cover, whether the interior is dot grid or 5mm squares, how thick the paper feels, whether the sticker sheet is kiss cut or die cut. Shopify gives you far more freedom than a marketplace, since it enforces no white background rule and no text ban, but that freedom means nothing catches your mistakes. If your foil reads as a gray smudge or your cream paper photographs as dingy white, the only feedback is a return request.
The technical side is simple to state and easy to get wrong. Shopify accepts images up to 20 megapixels and 20 MB, recommends square images around 2048 x 2048 px, and needs at least 800 x 800 px before product zoom activates. Zoom is the whole game for stationery, because that is where a shopper checks ruling, texture, and print quality.
The rest of this page covers what to shoot, how to keep fine paper detail alive through Shopify's automatic resizing, and how to wire up variant images for colorways and sizes.

Perfect For
Keeping Paper Texture Alive Through Shopify's CDN
Shopify re-encodes and resizes everything you upload, serving WebP at whatever dimensions the theme asks for. Fine, repeating detail is exactly what compression discards first: 5mm grid lines, dot grid, laid or linen embossing, and the tooth of 100% cotton paper all tend to soften or go blotchy. Upload a clean, high quality JPEG at 2048 x 2048 px or larger and never pre-compress it yourself, because Shopify will compress the already-compressed file again.
For interior page shots, fill the frame with the ruling rather than shooting a whole open notebook and hoping zoom saves you. Shoot texture with raking light from one side at a low angle so deboss, letterpress bite, and foil edges cast a visible shadow. Flat frontal light kills all three. Check the live product page at mobile width, not just the admin thumbnail, since that is the resize your customers actually receive.
Variant Images for Colorways, Sizes, and Rulings
Stationery listings tend to explode into variants: a notebook in six cover colors, two sizes, and three rulings. Shopify only shows a variant image when you assign one, so an unassigned combination silently falls back to the featured image and a shopper choosing Sage sees Blush. Assign a dedicated image to every color option at minimum, shot in the same position and light so switching swatches looks like a color change rather than a scene change.
Size and ruling are harder because they are not visible in a hero shot. Handle them with a labeled comparison image inside the gallery: A5 next to A6 with a pen for reference, or dot grid, lined, and blank pages side by side. Shopify allows text and infographics on product media, so use it. Also fill in alt text for each variant image, since it doubles as accessibility and image search copy.
