Shopify will not reject a watch photo. That is the trap. A marketplace tells you the background must be pure white and the product must fill 85 percent of the frame; Shopify just accepts the file and lets your theme decide what happens next. Upload a horizontal shot of a 40mm diver and Dawn's square crop can shave the crown off, or pad it until the dial is the size of a coin on a collection grid.
So the rules you have to obey are the ones you set. Shoot every watch on the same centerline, at the same distance, with the same crop margin, and export square at 2048 x 2048 pixels. Shopify enables click-to-zoom on images of at least 800 x 800, but a bezel engraving or a printed minute track only survives zoom near the 2048 mark. Files can run up to 20 megapixels and 20MB, and each product accepts up to 250 media items, so there is no reason to skimp on macro detail.

Killing Crystal Glare Without Flattening the Dial
A watch crystal is a mirror with a dial behind it. Shoot with a bare softbox and you get a bright white rectangle sitting over the 12 o'clock index, plus your lens and tripod reflected in the middle of a sunburst dial. The fix is a light tent or a large diffusion panel with a small hole cut for the lens, so the crystal reflects even white instead of a hard source, and the camera itself disappears into that hole.
Polished cases and steel bracelets need the opposite treatment. Give them something to reflect: black card either side of the case turns washed-out polished flanks into crisp dark gradients that read as metal. A polarizing filter tames the last of the crystal sheen, but push it too far and a sunburst or fume dial loses its shift entirely, so dial back until the dial still moves as you rotate the watch. Shopify's zoom means every stray dust speck on the crystal is visible, so blow the glass clean before each frame.
Variant Images, Theme Crops and Grid Consistency
Watches sell in colorways: black dial versus blue, steel bracelet versus brown leather, 38mm versus 41mm. On Shopify each variant can carry its own featured image, and the PDP swaps it the instant a shopper taps a swatch. If your blue-dial hero is framed at a slightly different angle or distance than the black, that swap looks like a glitch rather than a color change. Lock the tripod, lock the focus distance, and change only the watch.
Then account for the crop. Most themes offer square, portrait or adaptive image ratios, and collection cards usually crop to a single ratio regardless of what you upload. Shoot with roughly 10 to 15 percent breathing room around the case so a square crop never clips the lugs or crown. Watches worn at an angle on a stand are especially vulnerable, since the diagonal is the longest dimension. Keep every model at the same crown-right, 12-up orientation so your collection grid does not look like a jumble sale.
